Week 4 Reading reflection on 'Architectural weaponry: an interview with Mark Wigley''

This blog post is thought provoking about the ideas of constraint and freedom. 'We really build constraints – we don’t build freedoms: we build reductions of freedom.' From this blog we will know architecture is not always about constraint, it is more like a combination of constraint and freedom.

Week 3: Reflection on the Sustainable Future

This week we talked about real issues that truly impact our lives by considering issues such as social, cultural, technological, economic, financial and business sustainability on top of environmental sustainability. As the requirement, the Woodford site should be self-sufficient, not just environmental aspect. We divided it to three parts, basic needs, time scales, and space scales. For example, how can we make the water sustainable in our site? How to self-sufficient in one month, one year, or beyond? How to achieve the sustainability of economic aspects?

Water: recyle + rainwater
Food: surrounding farm (festival impot from Brisbane)
Energy: solar + wind + bio
Economic: vacation village + rent + retail on festival
Shelter: local material, recyle material

Week 3 Reading reflection on 'The continuous partial everywhere'

With the development of science and technology, computers and the Internet have been fully integrated into our daily lives, people even began to rely on those high-tech products. These high-tech products will make our lives become easy, comfortable, a world without distance, etc. 'The continous partial everywhere is the aspatial experience of simultaneity in immediate media. I am in the city where my friends are at the same as the one where I am myself. The city for me is no longer only a city in space, but now also a city in time. An aspatial city, without distances, in a kind of aspace.' However, it also threatens our health.

Week 2 Future Visions and Scenarios Idea Development

After the tutorial discussion, I  imagine our future will be something like this:
The depletion of non-renewable resources will happen, but with the development of technology, we can use sustaiable energy as our main power. Because of increasing number of human, more and more lands are used for buildings, people have to live in high-rise buildings. And also people dependent too much on technology. Therefore, the lack of social communicaion and nature connection will be problems. Future people need get away from their urban lives, they need more connection with the nature.

Week 2: Reflection on Social and Cultural Contexts

Durning the tutorial this week, we shared and discussed our findings and thoughts about potential future scenarios in four different themes, regional, virtual, suburban, and urban. Firstly, we discussed the future scenario of regional theme. The regional theme needs to be sustainable, and we considered from three aspects, resources, energy and shelter. We discussed influencing factors of each aspects and the relationship of each aspect. After that we talked about virtual theme, we came up with a lot of ideas, and we thought the key points of virtual theme are communication, experience, and good/bad aspects. About the suburban theme, we believed it has some realtion with virtual theme as the suburabn will be used as retail closure. The lifestyle and social communication will be changed in the future because we are over-reliance on technology. However, we can change many spaces to green area or public places. At last, we discussed the future scenario of having toll charge in Brisbane CBD. It will reduce the number of private cars in city and improve the traffic. So it is a sustainable idea and improve the development of Brisbane city.

After the discussion, I prefer to choose the regional theme as my first choice, because I like the feeling of closing to nature, and I believe sustainability will be one of the most important issues in the future.
